Breathe beauty

I be fierce.
But also gentle.
And loving.
And compassionate.

I will breathe beauty
Until I can breathe no more.

Welcoming Ramadan – Day 1

Today marks the first day of Ramadan. Ramadan is the holy month for Muslims by which we fast (don’t take food or water amongst other things) from sunrise to sunset for the next 29/30 days until the month is over. It is a time for increased introspection, reflection, deepening spirituality and developing a greater consciousness of self as well as practicing empathy for others.

May this holy month bring with it countless beauty and blessings, serenity and selam and a will to keep building and growing and improving long beyond the end of these 30 days, if we are so lucky to live them.

Saum maqbul. Selat maqbul. Duah maqbul. Insha’ALLAH.

Weeping clouds

weeping clouds
By Amira Ali

On the hazy open road
Migrant’s journey under one sky
Clasping suitcases
Full of unspoken longings
Inner complexities
Memories and dreams

And in the orphaned life
Making the best of burdens
In spite of the dead
Whose absence trail the living
In spite of events that split open the sky
And crack the grounds
Resiliently spirited
Migrants survive
Under weeping clouds
Through tough terrains
Of xenophobic attacks
Ruffled skirts and names
With hopes of unfurling tongues
Unravelling fears
Holding onto faith that one day

Will chant, “We know you. We see you.
I am in you like you are in me.
I am you like you are me.”

Dream Keeper

By Langston Hughes

Bring me all of your dreams,
You dreamer,
Bring me all your
Heart melodies
That I may wrap them
In a blue cloud-cloth
Away from the too-rough fingers
Of the world

You’ve Reached the Couple

You have reached the man
Who is not afraid to give it all up and start afresh
Who persists tirelessly night & day
To build an empire of his making
The man who puts family first and himself last
Who is not easily deterred nor easily fazed
You have reached Nebil

You have reached the woman
Who is full of soul
Who lights up a room
With rays of her high-pitched laughter
The one who stands tall
Regardless of how many times she falls
The woman who never ceases to be anbessa ye anbessa lej
You have reached Siham

You have reached the couple
Who have criss-crossed the earth
Sought the pearls
Beat the drums to their own rythms
And chose home

May love be your waking greeting
May respect cradle your every conversations
May joy never cease to be your constant companion
May blessings line your every paths
May understanding make up your very foundation
May progress be a daily ritual
May compassion dominate  your parting moments
May peace be your evening lullabies

May you put the ALMIGHTY at the centre of all you do
For if GOD is for us, who then can be against us?

Here’s wishing you a lifetime of bliss
May your today’s be beautiful
Your tomorrows bright
May the heavens smile upon your every days
Wishing you all the happiness and blessings this life has to offer.

With lots of love,

True Love…

“Those who love you are not fooled by mistakes you have made
or dark images you hold about yourself.
They remember your beauty when you feel ugly;
your wholeness when you are broken;
your innocence when you feel guilty;
and your purpose when you are confused.”

Man of my Dreams

The most handsome man in the world.

Man of my dreams
You are
The man of my dreams
The man in my dreams
The man of whom dreams are made of

You’ve taken up a permanent mark in my heart
In my thoughts & in my prayers

I fill your void with memories replayed
Over and over and over
Here the broken record is a keeper

You had a light of your own
So the darkest of rooms was never dark
With you in it

For you-
I want to write the sweetest of poems
With just enough sun to keep you warm
Enough breeze to keep you cool

For you-
I would filter all the beauty of the world
Strain it of all impurities
Mix in heaps of love
Blend in joy
Add pinches of laughter for good measure

If the sky is without emotion
For you-I want it to shed its tears on the barren lands
If it is blue
For you-I want it to blush bashfully
If it is devoid of humor
For you-I want it to rumble with laughter
If pitch darkness usurps
For you-I want dawn to break

If the scorching heat is unbearable
For you-I want a change in seasons

If you feel unacknowledged or unappreciated
For you-I want lightning to strike & thunder to applaud you

To the one who gave me all
I want it all

Dearest Dadddy-
You are the man of my dreams
The man in my dreams
The man of whom dreams are made of –

Rest in paradise dearest daddy.
